On Sat. Oct 5, Anthony Mercado was standing up to protect democracy, free speech and holding the Democratic Party accountable and transparent. A group of activists were peacefully protesting at a local Democratic Party public meeting (Regional Pre-endorsement Conference for CADEM ). A very tall caucasian man sitting in the first row jumped up out of his seat and physically attacked his friend Maria, who had the bullhorn. Witnesses saw Anthony came between the two, and the tall caucasian fell to the ground. The paramedics took the caucasian man to the hospital, but the police took Anthony to jail. Anthony is now in jail on $50,000 bail for a felony, and he'll need help with legal fees. Maria is pressing charges on the man who attacked her, but meanwhile our friend Anthony needs our help.
Eye witness accounts:
Linda who was present writes, "If you know him, Anthony is a Berning Berner who canvasses and helps grassroots causes and candidates wherever and whenever he can. On this day, he was protesting the corruption at the Region 14 delegate meeting because in this region, the convener made many ‘mistakes’, like not turning in new voter registrations from the elections - which is an actual crime. The CA Democratic Party has known all of this and has done nothing. None of the protesters at this meeting were asked for testimony. Police only asked Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, Bill Wong and a few others in the delegation, so the charges are inflated."
Maria writes, "I was a witness to the events that occurred at 3971 Pixie Avenue in Lakewood, CA. We were there to protest a public meeting of the CA Democratic Party Delegates in their endorsement meeting. Our protest was peaceful. We simply held up signs around the room stating facts of a prior election that laid the foundation for our protest. [I] had a megaphone where [I] was projecting these same facts. Unfortunately, the reaction from those gathered in the meeting was less than graceful. Within a few minutes, an elderly Caucasian lady immediately confronted [me] with an extremely aggressive demeanor. Assemblymember Alan Muratsuchi had to intervene and keep this lady away from [me]. However, she eventually came back and put her arms on [me]. The protest continued after she was taken out of the building. A gentlemen from the first row rapidly got up from his seat and came towards [me] in a violent manner. He was over 6 feet tall and although he was older it was clear that he was agile enough to rapidly get up from his seat. He started yelling at [me] and put his hands on [me]. ... Since there were only 6 of us and at least 20 other people present who by the nature of us disrupting their meeting are against us, I feel that this incident and subsequent arrest is biased against us. None of us were asked for testimony or our account of the events. Instead those at the meeting all immediately began talking to the responding deputies. Anthony Mercado only intervened because his longtime friend,[me] [was being attacked] by this much taller male. As soon as the police arrived, the Assemblymember used his title to talk to the responding deputy first therefore clouding how the actual events unfolded."
