Monday 6July 2020, a healthy baby boy Anri was born in Krasnodar, Russia. Some time later the parents  have noticed that Anri became weaker, he couldn’t move his hands and legs; he was even too faint to swallow his milk. Anri was diagnosed with Type 1 SMA at the age of two months.
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is the leading genetic cause of death for infants. Infant-onset is the most severe form of SMA, characterised by progressive weakness of muscles, difficulties with breathing and swallowing.
Though it is not possible to accurately predict, for the majority of children (approximately 95%) life expectancy is less than 18 months unless pharmacological treatment is introduced.
