Help Anna Safely Relocate to the EU
Donation protected
I'm Anna, a transgender woman in her thirties, and I'm seeking to relocate from the United States to the EU as soon as possible. I'm certain I need to leave before it's too late—the situation for trans* people is deteriorating so quickly that I know I need to get ahead of the danger and migrate to a new home.
My destination is Europe because I am a dual citizen, and I can legally live and work there once my documentation is sorted out.
I do not make this decision lightly: I will be leaving everyone I know and abandoning most of my physical possessions to start my life entirely from scratch. I've spent months planning a careful, legal relocation to Italy—as my first step—but the process is expensive, and I don't have the means with my meager earnings.
The Threat. The fact that trans* people are in the political crosshairs in this country is no secret, but I don't think most are truly aware of what a huge precipice we're at. I've made a video (which I've posted below) detailing why the situation is urgent, and therefore why it's important for me to relocate.
The TLDR of the video will be: If I do not get out now, I might not be able to, as the very real country-wide persecution escalates. There are systemic transphobic moves being made right now that have hardly been reported in the mainstream media—which mostly focuses on specific trans* issues as partisan clickbait. Many of these maneuvers specifically target the ability of trans* people to have legal documentation, which is what allows for mobility and travel.
The Budget. For the sake of transparency, I've included a breakdown of my costs.
The first step is the correction of my civil information (legal name, gender, residence) with the government abroad and getting my European passport. This will allow me to live and work abroad. Unfortunately, the process is multi-step and the document fees add up. This is my most immediate need as I need to start the process right now.
- Total Document Fees: $438.25
The next step is to get myself and my belongings across the Atlantic. At a minimum, I'm bringing 2 roller suitcases, 2 footlockers/camp trunks, a backpack, and a duffle bag (total $430 in baggage fees), plus the plane ticket itself (~$570). Since I'm coming over with all my possessions, I will also need a shuttle service to bring myself and 6 pieces of luggage (~$400) from the airport to my new residence.
- Total Travel Cost: $1400
If the above needs get met, the "stretch goal" is to be able to ship some of my books over as well. I'm prepared to move with only my clothes and laptop if necessary and have already gotten rid of 50% of my belongings, but I would like to move with some dignity and keep some small portion (about 15%) of my book library ($745 for 4 smallish book boxes). I also need to ship some vital documents to my family in the Midwest ($60.22).
- Total Shipping Cost: $805.22
Finally, to get an apartment in the town I'm moving to will require a deposit of 3 months' rent (~$1500) plus immediate set-up for utilities ($135).
- Total Move-In Cost: about $1635
What I'm asking for does not factor in many other costs associated with this move, including some document fees I'm not certain about, repurchasing basic essentials when I get to the other side, the first month's rent, or the fact that the dollar is likely to devalue somewhat in the next 6 months. In addition, to be eligible for an apartment as a self-employed digital nomad, it's likely I will need to be able to demonstrate having money in savings.
To all those who support me, thank you from the bottom of my heart! Thank you for supporting my human dignity, and allowing me to rebuild my life somewhere where I can put down roots and have a happier, safer, and more peaceful life. ️⚧️✨
