My dear friend Anna is fighting another attempt by her son’s father (T) to gain full custody of their 12-year-old son. For the past six months, Anna’s son has been separated from her and his 6-year-old brother, missing out on precious family moments and even the holidays together. T is seeking sole custody, using misinformation about a criminal incident at Anna’s home to sway the courts. He has obtained a temporary order for sole custody, leaving Anna with only supervised visits. As a single mom, Anna is already financially stretched, and these ongoing custody battles are making it nearly impossible for her to support herself and her children.
In late September, Anna discovered her townhome was unsafe due to the actions of people in her community. While she was away visiting family, her home was broken into, and important documents like social security cards and a hard drive were stolen. She also found that her smart devices and online accounts had been compromised. Anna acted quickly to protect her children, having them stay with their Aunt so they could continue attending school safely while she worked with police to address the break-in and digital attack.
During this stressful time, Anna also faced a family emergency when her youngest son’s uncle was hospitalized after a car accident. While supporting her family at the hospital, Anna tried to co-parent with T, specifically regarding their 12-year-old son, explaining the situation and arranging for him to stay with his Aunt. However, T used this moment to file for emergency temporary custody, making it extremely difficult for Anna to see or communicate with her 12-year-old son, despite court orders for regular visitation and daily calls. Anna still has her youngest son at home, but her 12-year-old son has only been able to see his little brother a handful of times through this time.
