Medical background and Diagnosis.
I am Anna Samson from Tanzania. I am currently pursuing my PhD in Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Living far from my family and on a tight student budget, I am facing significant financial challenges due to surgery and recovery, including out-of-pocket medical expenses and co-pays.
I first started experiencing pain in my left leg in September 2018. Initially, the discomfort was mild, but over the years it became intense and severe. Despite undergoing several screenings and various treatments, the cause of her persistent pain remained unknown and unresolved.
For five years, I navigated a frustrating journey filled with doctors’ appointments and unhelpful diagnoses. It wasn’t until June 1, 2023, that I did another MRI for the left hip and lower limb, that the doctor finally uncovered the root of my hip pain. The findings from this MRI provided three crucial insights, revealing:
• Bilateral avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip joints, more severe on the left
• Subchondral collapse of the left hip joint, with marrow edema and narrowing of the joint space
• Mild bilateral joint effusions.
My orthopedic surgeon advised hip replacement surgery, as the bone structure had deteriorated, causing friction and pain when walking. However, the surgery could not be performed at that time due to financial and logistical challenges.
A follow-up MRI conducted on June 12, 2024, revealed:
Left Hip:
• Avascular necrosis with subchondral collapse
• Mild anterosuperior labral tear
• Moderate degenerative disease
Right Hip:
• Early-stage AVN without collapse
• Mild hip dysplasia
• Mild to moderate edema in the quadratus femoris muscle, possibly due to ischiofemoral impingement
Recommended Surgeries:
• Left Hip Joint: Total hip replacement
• Right Hip Joint: Core decompression and bone grafting.
