Help Anna move safely during the COVID-19 pandemic
Donation protected
My dear friend, Anna Alves, faces eviction and needs our help to secure emergency housing in Manila.
Anna was in the Philippines teaching one semester at a Manila university and doing research when COVID-19 hit. Her Fulbright fellowship had recently ended, and then the semester did too, so she was out of work with no source of income to pay rent. It wasn’t safe to travel back to the US with no vaccine available. As a cancer survivor, such a long transpacific flight—if even available—would make her highly vulnerable to potentially contracting the virus.
Recently, she has found work again, but she owes a large amount of backpay: about $2,224.49 USD. Her landlord is demanding payment within five days and intends to evict her if it isn’t paid in full.
Realistically, it is difficult to raise that much money with only five days’ notice. Anna needs to secure a new apartment, but she needs a minimum of $700 USD in order to do so. Our intention is to raise enough money for Anna to move safely now and then to cover her backpay so she can avoid legal repercussions. Also, her current apartment was furnished, and she has no furnishings in the Philippines. She will need to procure a bed and air conditioner (Manila is HOT; AC is an absolute need.)
On top of this, Anna’s family isn’t in a position to help; her aunt and uncle were recently hospitalized due to COVID-19, and she just lost her aunt last week due to COVID-19 complications. Anna is the most brilliant, thoughtful, community-oriented, supportive friend, and I really hope we can come together as a community to support her.
The following is the breakdown of how these funds will be used:
$700.00 USD for move-in fees
$2,224.49 USD for rent backpay
$575.51 USD for air conditioner, bed, and other moving costs
We know these times are tough on everyone. We’re grateful for any support you can offer. The US dollar goes a long way in Philippine pesos, so no amount is too small. Thank you so much.
