Help Anna Liu's Path to Recovery

In support of Anna Liu's journey to recovery -

We, at Point Grey Physio, stand before you today with a shared purpose that extends beyond the bounds of our clinic walls. Our hearts are heavy as we bring to your attention the harrowing story of Anna Liu, a victim struck by tragedy. The story of Anna's tragic event was brought to our clinic's attention as we specialize in providing management and rehabilitation of Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) patients.

The horrific gun attack took place on June 30th, 2023, around 2:40 PM at the busy intersection of McCowan Road and Lawrence Avenue East in the East end of Toronto. Anna was the unfortunate innocent victim caught in this tragic event.

A total of three bullets penetrated and shattered different parts of Anna. The first bullet penetrated her right eye and skull. Cranial surgery was performed to remove the bullet; however, some fragments could not be removed and remain inside Anna’s brain. Facial reconstructive surgery was also performed in an effort to restore the basic structure of Anna's face. Following the surgery, Anna was in a coma for 11 days.

Out of coma, Anna went in for her second surgery in an attempt to remove the second and the third bullet from her body. Unfortunately, doctors assessed that the second bullet is situated too close to her artery and the third bullet is too deep inside the tissue to be removed. Due to the permanent damage caused by the second and the third bullets, a metal pin now sits in her left shoulder and Anna has lost significant mobility of her arm and shoulder. To this day, she still remains in the ICU.

As one could imagine, Anna now requires lifelong specialized care as a result of this senseless violent act. The long-term effects of her cranial surgery are still unknown. Every day, Anna's life is filled with fear and anxiety, with her once-promising future overshadowed by despair.

She was recommended to us by one of our clients who knew about our clinic's expertise in rehabilitation and insurance claims related to Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA). They hoped that we could assist this unfortunate family. Over the past few weeks, we have contacted numerous lawyers and insurance companies in the hopes of finding help for Anna and her family. We were shocked to find out that Anna's injuries did not qualify under a Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) benefit as her injuries were a result of a criminal act. In short, Anna's family is not qualified to receive any support or compensation from her insurance company.
Desperate and stunned, we searched for other public avenues to help Anna's family but quickly learned that the Victims Compensation Ontario Fund was discontinued in 2005.

Words cannot describe what Anna and her family are going through at this moment. Anna has a loving husband and a 17-year-old son who has been practicing English twice a day with his mom in preparation of coming Toronto for his post-secondary education. The son currently resides in China and was told by his dad that his mom went on a cruise trip and would be back in a few weeks to resume their English lessons together. Anna and her husband came to Toronto in 2019 in the hopes of providing a better future for their son and the family.

The funds raised here will primarily be used to cover future reconstructive surgeries that are essential for Anna’s physical and psychological healing. The surgeries will help restore not only her appearance but most importantly, her self-confidence. Due to Anna's lack of security and trust in strangers and nurses since the event, her husband must be by her side 24/7 to care for her since they do not have any other family members in Canada to provide any sort of additional support. His commitment to her care prevents him from being able to work. The couple has lost both of their incomes and now faces the pressure of supporting not only the cost of surgeries, but also their daily expenses, rent, and educational fees for their son.

On behalf of Guoxiang Yin, Anna Liu’s loving husband, we share this heart-wrenching story to raise awareness and support for their family during this challenging time.”

It is with our heavy and hopeful heart that we kindly request your support in reaching our fundraising goal. Any amount, no matter how small, will make a BIG difference to Anna and her family. Today, we implore you to donate and become an integral part of a collective force that rekindles hope, restores faith, and fortifies the very foundation of our community.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Point Grey Physio and the Anna Liu Support Team
