Our family is facing something we never imagined we would have to go through.

Anna’s 2-year-old son, Christian, was taken to the doctor on Tuesday after a pelvic mass had rapidly developed over the course of just three weeks. Later that afternoon, Christian underwent an ultrasound, which showed that the mass was highly vascular. The following morning, the family received the results and Christian was immediately admitted to Riverbend Pediatric Surgery for a CT scan and further evaluation.

The CT scan revealed a 7-centimeter mass extending from the left pelvic sidewall to the perineum, which doctors said was concerning for malignancy.

That same night, doctors discovered that the tumor was pressing against Christian’s urethra and causing urinary retention. A Foley catheter had to be placed to help him urinate. He was then transferred to OHSU and admitted to the pediatric oncology floor.

On Friday evening, Christian underwent a biopsy. His pediatric surgeon and oncology team believe the tumor is malignant and suspect rhabdomyosarcoma, but the family is still awaiting the biopsy results for confirmation.

Christian is currently experiencing significant pain and requires strong pain medication to keep him comfortable. He will remain hospitalized while doctors perform additional scans, place a port for treatment, receive the biopsy results, and determine the best treatment plan for him.

This has all happened incredibly fast. Just weeks ago, Anna and her family never could have imagined that they would suddenly be facing the possibility of childhood cancer. They are heartbroken, devastated, and doing everything they can to stay strong for Christian and his two little sisters, who are only 18 months and 4 months old.

The family knows that the road ahead may be long. They need to remain near the hospital while Christian undergoes testing and begins treatment. Meanwhile, they still have rent and utilities at home, along with the unexpected expenses of gas, lodging, food, travel, and other costs that come with an extended hospitalization.

Anna’s husband also has work responsibilities that require him to travel, making this situation even more difficult. Both parents need to be there for Christian while also caring for their two young daughters.

They are asking for help so they can focus their energy where it belongs: on Christian and his recovery, rather than worrying about how they will manage the financial burden of this unexpected crisis.
