My name is Aniela, I’m a 20-year-old student at Joliet Junior College, working toward my dream of becoming a firefighter. Ever since I was young, I’ve wanted to be someone who shows up when people need help the most. That’s the career I’ve committed myself to—but this semester, I hit a wall I can’t climb alone.

Last year, I tore my ACL during college basketball. Basketball was more than a sport to me—it was my outlet, my opportunity, and a big part of who I was. I was on a full-ride scholarship, but once I was injured, everything changed. I had to redshirt, I couldn’t play, and I’ve been fighting through recovery and the depression that came with losing the one thing that used to keep me grounded.

During all of this, I still pushed myself to stay in school, work, and keep growing. I work hard, But with medical bills, limited hours due to my injury, and life happening faster than I can catch it, I’ve fallen behind financially in a way I can’t fix on my own in time for next semester.

Despite everything, I want to stay in school. I want to continue my training, stay on track with my degree, and keep moving toward the future I’ve fought so hard for. Dropping out isn’t an option I want to consider—not after everything I’ve overcome already.

So I’m asking for help.
