My Nursing Journey
Hello, my name is Angela. I am a 51-year-old nursing student. In the fall of 1992, I began taking prerequisites for nursing at Highland Park Community College in Highland Park, MI. After completing the prereqs, I waited an entire year to be interviewed for the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA), a program for nursing. I made it all the way to the interview to be told that the program was for "Detroit" residents only ( I lived in Highland Park). From that point, I went in a different direction concerning education and working.
Regardless of what profession I worked over the years, Nursing was always in the back of my mind. I would always ask nursing students about their journey and if they thought it was possible to work while in nursing school.
Fast forward to the fall of 2011. I decided to go back to school. Since I had been out of the traditional college setting for so long, I had to start at square one, as though I had never been to school post-high school. I would have to complete remedial classes before I could begin my college-level courses. Once I was at the point of taking college-level courses, I would have to complete certain courses before taking others. Due to working a full time schedule, I would have to take one or two classes at a time. By the spring of 2023, I had finally taken all of the prerequisites that are required to apply for the Associate Degree in Nursing program, which is a two-year program. I knew that there was a great possibility that I would have to quit my job, as a result, I applied for the 12-month LVN program and was accepted. My job could not accommodate my school schedule, so I took a leap of faith and quit my job to focus on school. I had maxed out my undergrad loans and only had $6,000 remaining. The cost of the program was $21,000. I took out a couple of personal loans, but those were not enough. I had to start paying out of pocket. Here I am with a little over 60 days remaining before graduation, and I am a little over $3500 short of paying for the remainder of my program. Half of that total must be paid by February first and the remaining amount must be paid by March first. If I can get 175 of my family/friends to donate $20, I will reach my goal. Your support is greatly appreciated.
God Bless you all and thank you for supporting my dream!
