Help Angela and Gavin Relocate to Cincinnati

Donation protected

My best friend Angela Kaichen and her son Gavin, 13, are having to relocate from Louisiana to Cincinnati, OH in order for Gavin to receive the treatment he needs at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Gavin is suffering from a very rare liver disease called Autoimmune Hepatitis Type 2. He was diagnosed with this disease at only 6 months of age and is the youngest person ever to have been diagnosed. Due to the disease, Gavin's immune system fights off his liver causing cirrhosis and possible liver failure. Gavin has a team of specialists at Cincinnati Children's Hospital who are exploring a wide range of treatment options. Until now, the only way the doctors knew how to treat the disease was for Gavin to be on high amounts of steroids. The negative effects of years of steroid use has stunted his growth, caused him to have severe osteoporosis, cardiac issues, and a weakened immune system. This summer, Angela was given the news that his doctors wanted to trial him on the anti-rejection drug, Prograf, with the hopes of slowly weaning him off the steroids. This is the first time these doctors have ever prescribed this drug in a non-transplant patient. In order for this to happen, Angela and Gavin had to temporarily relocate to Cincinnati where Gavin can be constantly monitored by his team of specialists, as it was unclear how Gavin's liver would react to the decreased steroid use. Angela, being a single-mom and on a fixed income due to an accident she suffered a few years back, has had to pick up her life and spend the summer in Cincinnati. She has done whatever she has needed in order to help her son. After a few months on the new medicine, the doctors have been able to wean Gavin to only half the amount of steroids that he usually is prescribed. But, he still has a long road ahead. Angela, with the suggestions of his doctors, have decided to make Cincinnati home where he can be near his doctors and monitored closely. Angela and Gavin have secured themselves a 1 bedroom apartment only minutes from the hospital. But, Angela is in need of moving all their belongings from Louisiana to Cincinnati. Angela has researched all her options and the only and safest way for them to move their belongings is to have someone bring their belongings to them. Gavin has a very weakened immune system from the Prograf and steroid use, and is not able to travel, especially during this new heightened time of Covid. Angela is also not able to travel, as she risks bringing home any sickness to her son. I am hoping to raise enough funds to be able to hire movers to load their belongings in Louisiana and drive them to Cincinnati and provide a flight back for that person. We have reached out to many family and friends and none have been able to physically help with getting their belongings to Cincinnati. We estimate the cost around $4000 to make this happen. All donations are greatly appreciated, no matter the amount. Angela made the decision to call Cincinnati home when her son told her that, for as long as he can remember, this is the first time he has felt safe and secure knowing that he is only minutes away from his team of specialists who are ready to handle any hurdle that may come up during his fight with this rare liver disease.
