Our Story of Contractor Fraud

Mark and I are parents of two sons, one homeschooled, and one is married, and he and our daughter in love, are making us first time grandparents in just a couple of weeks. This should be one of the happiest times of our life but we are living through one of the most difficult times in our entire marriage of 21 years.

We sold our first and only home in Kannapolis NC at the end of 2022 in order to purchase land in Salisbury NC and build our forever home - nothing extravagant but a spacious kitchen and family room, with privacy - surrounded by woods where our sons (and grand children) can hunt and explore and ride four wheelers - our family’s dream!

Mark and I are each self employed. He owns GQ Barber shop in Granite Quarry NC and I own Angel Cakes that I started in my home over a decade ago.

Once we sold our home, we purchased our land and applied for a construction loan, with David Gulledge (Omega Renovations) to be our contractor. All was finally approved after a year of paperwork to make us eligible for our loan. We also purchased a camper to park on my sister and brother in law's property a mile away from the construction site for us to live in during the construction. During that first year while waiting on financing, we gave David money from savings to be used to begin clearing the property, permits, etc. A year later when financing was approved David assured us all was in place and the project would be completed quickly.

We currently have a concrete slab, some clearing and grading , plumbing rough, and the associated permits. Most of this hasn’t been fully completed and the concrete was not done correctly and will need to be reworked. There has been one excuse after another as to why the project isn’t coming along faster, but as the deadline continued to get closer we began to press him harder for results. Through a series of meetings (and digging on our own) we discovered that his contractor’s license expired in December 2024, there is a lien on our property by Sunbelt because of a a large bill for equipment that David never paid. We have caught David in a host of lies about money and receipts and have heard from others that they have had similar experiences with this contractor.

Once all of this information surfaced we informed the bank and the contract has now been paused. The bank advised us to hire an attorney, which we did, basically to address the lien by Sunbelt.

David Gulledge has provided receipts (some are legit and some are not). There is much financial information that we are not at liberty to share at this point, but need additional funds to keep from losing everything.
This sounds so unacceptable to us! People who work hard and plan for their future should be protected from criminal activity such as this! At the time we had no reason to not trust him.

We don’t want this to happen to anyone else. Mark and I along with our young son have been living in a travel camper for 2.5 years and don’t know what's going to happen next.

Thank you for reading our story. Please lift our family in prayer as we work through this difficult time and seek God for what justice can take place.
