On Mother’s Day (May 11, 2025), our dear friend Andy received the gift of life through a liver transplant at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. While we are incredibly grateful for this life-saving procedure, the road to recovery brings significant financial challenges for Andy and his family.

Andy’s Story

Since December, Andy’s life has been a blur of hospital stays, medical tests, and quiet suffering. He’s battled through gallstones, infections, and overwhelming fatigue—but never once did he complain. He showed up to work when he could, smiled when it was hardest, and poured every ounce of strength he had into holding life together for his family.

Behind that smile, though, was a man running on empty. Walking his daughter to school, something so ordinary, left him breathless and pale. He'd lie down after just a few hours awake, needing long naps just to get through the day. And still—he asked for nothing. He just kept pushing.

His daughter, too young to understand it all, would gently place her hand on his arm when he rested, whispering, “Daddy, are you okay?” That’s the kind of love that surrounded him. And now, after receiving a second chance at life, he deserves the space to heal—not the stress of mounting bills.

Though Andy has insurance, out-of-pocket costs are overwhelming:

Hospital stays: Multiple admissions since December

Transplant surgery: A major, high-cost procedure

Ongoing care: Regular follow-ups and rehab

Anti-rejection meds: Thousands annually—for life

Reduced income: Long-term disability may only cover 60% of his normal pay

Family impact: His wife may need short-term disability, reducing her pay to 2/3 of her income
