Help Andy Heal: Liver Transplant Fund

Hi, I'm Sarah, and I’m reaching out on behalf of my dear friend, Andy. He is currently waiting for a liver transplant at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Since December, Andy has faced multiple hospitalizations due to complications, including gallstones, infections, and severe fatigue. Although he’s not in the hospital anymore, Andy is still dealing with the effects of his condition as he waits for a transplant.

Despite all of this, Andy remains upbeat, cracks jokes, and continues to work when he can. But we can all see how much this has taken a toll on him. Simple things that many of us take for granted, like walking his daughter to school, have become incredibly exhausting. He needs daily naps just to function, and it’s heartbreaking to see how much it’s affecting both his physical and mental health.

Perhaps the hardest part is knowing that his sweet daughter at home needs her dad to focus on healing and not worry about the overwhelming financial burden. Every day, Andy is fighting to stay strong for her, but the stress of medical bills, medications, and lost income makes that healing process harder.

The financial burden of transplant care is overwhelming. While Andy has insurance, the out-of-pocket costs for hospital stays, anti-rejection medications, and ongoing care will run into thousands of dollars annually. If his condition forces him onto long-term disability, he will only receive 60% of his income. His wife may also need to take short-term disability to care for him during recovery, which would reduce her income to just two-thirds of her regular salary.

Andy and his family have always been modest, making do with what they have, but the combined impact of reduced income and mounting medical expenses will be a lot to manage. Every contribution, no matter the amount, will help ease the financial burden and allow Andy to focus on his recovery and his daughter, instead of worrying about bills.
