For those who don't know us, our names are Andrew Roberts and Tai Henry. We live just outside of LA. I (Andrew) work as a Technical Director and Lighting Designer at theatres throughout the city, and Tai works in childcare, mainly as a nanny. While LA has one of the better public transportation systems in America (a low bar, we know), we have found ourselves to the point of needing a car.
Three years ago, I quit a very abusive job very shortly before the WGA strike, and spent almost a full year unemployed, without the ability to collect unemployment. Just over a year and a half ago, Tai and I were both wrongfully terminated from our jobs, but were unable to take action. While I was lucky enough to land a few theatre residencies shortly after, Tai was not so lucky and has been in and out of employment since then. Suffice it to say, we're able to survive and pay all of our bills on time, but we haven't been able to hit the position of truly being able to afford large purchases, like a car.
While we are both lucky to have solid public transit around us, and it has been possible to get to and from work consistently, we are getting to the point of needing a car. Between myself, working at a number of different theatres, and Tai often needing a vehicle for more consistent childcare work, it is just time to focus on getting one.
Since we struggle to save up more, we are looking for help from our community, friends, and loved ones to support us in our time of need. Every bit helps, and if you can't donate, spreading the word would also help us greatly.
