Help Andrés renew his passport

My name is Andrés, a Venezuelan immigrant and graduate student at the University of Iowa pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemistry. I'm currently working as a Research Assistant at UIowa, as well as Music Director at KRUI 89.7FM, which I am thankful for since they have allowed me to maintain a decent lifestyle in Iowa City. If we ever crossed paths in the past those details are not new for you, but those who I kept close know a little more about my current situation.

In short terms, I have been holding an expired passport and expired student Visa for most of my graduate school period, without an easy avenue to renew it. The lack infrastructure of the Venezuelan Administrative Service for Identification, Migration and Immigration (SAIME) did not allow thousands of Venezuelans (including myself) to easily renew their passport. Therefore, I waited until the infrastructure developed and focused on my first couple of years in grad school.

After evaluating some options and with great information from other Venezuelans under similar circumstances, I decided that going to Colombia was the only good option, since they allow the entry of Venezuelans with an expired passport within 10 years. To secure my way back in the US, I would need a valid student Visa, which is not possible to acquire with an expired passport. Therefore the best next choice is obtaining a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans and consequently applying for an Advance Parole Document (APD), which would allow me to travel to Colombia and come back to the US to finish my Ph.D.

Fortunately, I was able to cover the fees for the TPS, which I am a current beneficiary of. However, as I am planning to go to Colombia is evident that I will not be able to sustain the costs of applying to get the APD ($630), booking flights ($400-$700), lodging near the Embassy/Consulate ($180-210), passport and consular fees ($336), and delivery procedures to get my passport to the US ($175). Which is the reason why I am recurring to this method to ask for help in affording these costs so I can successfully renew my passport.

Lastly, I would like to extend my gratitude with you and any others you decide to share this fundraiser with. As I'm heading into my last academic year as a graduate student, I am hoping to continue my life here in the US with a job after graduation. Having a passport is and will be crucial for that to happen, and I would be forever in debt for those of you contributing.

Mi nombre es Andrés, imigrante Venezolano y estudiante de Ph.D. en Química en la Universidad de Iowa. Trabajo como Asistente a Investigador en la universidad, y también como Director de Music en KRUI 89.7FM, con los que estoy bastante agradecidos porque me han dado la posibilidad de vivir en Iowa city decentemente. Si estas leyendo esto es porque quizás hayamos cruzado caminos en el pasado y los detalles dichos no sean nuevos, pero a los que mantuve mas cerca sabían un poco mas de detalles sobre mi situación.

En pocas palabras, mi pasaporte y mi visa de estudiante han estado vencidos por la mayor parte de mi carrera universitaria post-graduación, sin alguna manera fácil de renovarlos. El bajo nivel de la infraestructura del Servicio Administrativo de Identification, Migración e Inmigración (SAIME) no le daba la posibilidad a Venezolanos que emigraron (incluyéndome) a renovar su pasaporte fácilmente. Por esa razon esperé hasta que la infraestructura se desarrollara y me enfoque en mis estudios.

Después de evaluar las opciones y con gran ayuda de otros Venezolanos en situaciones similares, decidí en ir a Colombia para renovar mi pasaporte, puesto a que admiten Venezolanos con pasaporte vencido por 10 años desde la fecha de vencimiento. Ahora para asegurar mi vuelta a Estados Unidos necesitaría un visa de estudiante vigente, que no es posible de gestionar con un pasaporte vencido. La mejor opción es obtener Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS) y después aplicar por el Documento de Libertad Condicional Anticipada (APD), que me permitiría el reingreso a los Estados Unidos y terminar mi Ph.D.

Afortunadamente, pude cubrir los costos del TPS, y ya lo tengo en mano. Sin embargo, es evidente que no voy a poder cubrir todos los costos de aplicación para el APD ($630), vuelo ida y vuelta a Bogotá ($400-$700), estadía cerca de la embajada/consulado ($180-210), tarifas del pasaporte y consulares ($336), y procedimientos de envío desde Bogota a Iowa City ($175). Debido a esto he recurrido a este método para poder costear los pagos para poder renovar mi pasaporte.

Para terminar, quisiera agradecerles de antemano por su contribución o si compartiste la campaña, lo aprecio bastante. Ya que entro en mi ultimo año como estudiante de Ph.D. espero continuar mi vida aquí en los Estado Unidos asegurando un trabajo después de mi graduación. Tener un pasaporte vigente en mano sera crucial para que eso pase, y estaré por siempre en deuda con ustedes que contribuyeron.
