Please help with rehabilitation equipment cost
In 2015, at the age on 48 , Andrea had a spinal fusion due to years of chronic low back pain , sciatica and herniated discs. Due to the wait list for spine surgeons in Toronto, the surgery was performed in Europe and she was hopeful that it would alleviate the pain and improve her quality of life. However, upon returning to Canada and starting rehabilitation the pain and declined functioning indicated that she has what’s called a “failed back syndrome” that happens after an unsuccessful spinal fusion.
What complicates her healing more is severe osteoporosis ( caused by chemotherapy for breast cancer in 2003 and surgical menopause due to ovarian cancer in 2013) with several bone fractures in pelvis and spine.
Andrea still lives with chronic back pain every day and as a result she’s on long term disability from work as a nurse educator.
Over the years she has tried various assistive devices, to safely transfer and walk while receiving regular physiotherapy, which is thankfully covered by her insurance. However, at this point she needs a more complex equipment that helps her safely walk and stay mobile. It is a gait trainer, called Rifton E-Pacer. The retail price is $9-10K. It would assist her to sit to stand, transfer and walk short distances safely and without extra strain/pain on her back and legs. Unfortunately, this device is not covered under the Assistive Device Program or her insurance.
We’re hoping that you can help to purchase this electronic equipment. It would help her quality of life by being more mobile, safe and pain free and keep her out of a wheelchair permanently.
Every bit of support is greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much!
