Trying out for a sport she loves, basketball, 17-year-old Anabel collapsed with a cardiac event on Sunday, March 3. Her coach and coach’s wife performed lifesaving CPR with an AED. She was transported to the ER where she was not breathing on her own or pumping her own heart. She continued to go into cardiac arrest and remained unstable. She was down for one hour and 37 minutes. She was finally stable enough to be moved to a different hospital but continued to code throughout Sunday evening.

The decision was made to take a risk and fly her to MUSC Charleston for life saving measures and treatment on Monday. Miraculously on Tuesday, she took out her own breathing tube and wanted water and her phone.

Anabel is still in critical condition and remains at MUSC for testing, monitoring, and blood clots. The immediate concerns are damage and the functioning of her heart and liver and blood clots that she has developed. She is alive by the Grace of God.

Her Mom and Dad are with her at the hospital in Charleston and will remain with her during her time at MUSC. Her four siblings will be in Columbia while she is receiving treatment.
