My mother has been fighting cancer for six years. I have seen her go through good days and bad. Recently, it has turned into mainly bad. She has two tumors in her liver, one in each lobe. Her liver has grown 3 times the size of a normal liver. Today, she struggles to breath and began wheezing from the pressure of her liver pressing against her lungs. But not only does it press on her lungs, it has been pressing against the rest of her organs surrounding her liver. She describes the pain as if she were 15 months pregnant, if that were possible and being in constant discomfort. When we went to go see her oncologist, he said that she gained 20 pounds in water weight and all he could do was recommend a hospice for her.
We were were disappointed at the response of her oncologist. So we decided to seek out other options. We found a doctor who happened to be a temp for our family doctor who has the same type of cancer my mother does. Pancreatic Neuro-endocrine. But the doctor's cancer hasn't spread to anywhere else like my mothers has. She helped my mother with some medication to release the fluid from her body. Along with this wonderful doctor who can relate and understand her discomfort, we found a doctor in Mexico who can help her possibly kill or minimize the growth in her liver. With the urgency of her condition at the moment, the cost that he is asking for is a lot, but my mothers life is priceless to us. We need to find any way possible to make her life less painful and more enjoyable, and try our best to find a way for her to live longer. There have been times where I have looked at her in the eyes and saw how much she just wants to give up. But when I see how much she fights to keep living for her family, I can only respond with fighting to get her the best treatment possible and find a way to raise the money and sell whatever we have in order to make her feel better.
As you read this you already know the push we’re fighting for to keep going as a whole family, but the important part is that we stick together. I hope you all can someday understand the importance of family and to never take it for granted. Love your family everyday that way you’ll never feel like you didn’t have the chance to spend enough time with them.
