Dear Friends, Family and Supporters,
I’m reaching out to all of you regarding my amazing cousin Ana Reyes Lewis. Ana’s 42 years old, married to her best friend John Lewis (AKA BAD ASS VEGAN) and a Mom to two beautiful young kids: Pax, 3, and Marz, 1.
Although Ana’s an extremely private person, I’m sharing this story with Ana’s blessing. She and her family have had a very challenging 2019 (to say the least).
On January 15th, as Ana was preparing to move her family from Florida to North Carolina, she received the worst call of her life. Her Endocrinologist told Ana that she tested positive for Thyroid Cancer. This news took her completely by surprise and caused a great deal of fear and anxiety about the future. She literally had the moving company in her home at the time packing boxes for the move to Wilmington, North Carolina. Ana and her family still managed to make the move, but a cloud of uncertainty now hung over Ana.
After Ana made the move, she immediately sought a second opinion about her diagnosis. Unfortunately, the second opinion confirmed her original cancer diagnosis. Although Ana had transitional health insurance from her previous employer in Florida (COBRA insurance at $1800 a month), she began her cancer treatment plan unclear of what the insurance would cover.
On February 7th, Ana underwent a Thyroidectomy. That was quickly followed by a radiation treatment in March: a single radiation pill of iodine 250 mercury MCQ. Ana had to be isolated in a hotel room for six days after the treatment.
Following those treatments, Ana and her family felt blessed that the prognosis looked good. On the other hand, however, they also found out that Ana’s COBRA insurance would not cover any of the treatments she had already received. Her family had accrued bills from nuclear pathology, the ENT surgeon and the Anesthesiologist. In addition, she was billed for her CAT scan and her hospital stay. Without receiving any benefits from COBRA, she and her family now owe more than $25,000 for her treatment.
As a person also currently going through a battle with Cancer (Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma), I not only love my cousin and empathize with what she’s going through, but I’m also determined to be there for her. As I mentioned earlier, Ana’s always been there for everyone else. As a Doctor of Physical Therapy, her whole life has been largely spent helping other people. It’s my turn to give back to Ana by rallying support from everyone to help her and her family in these difficult days.
Ana needs our help now more than ever. While she currently struggles under the weight of her previous medical debt, Ana’s journey is far from over. On August 29th, she received the devastating news that thyroid cancer cells have been found in her lymph nodes. Her recent PET Scan will determine if the cancer is isolated in that area or has metastasized into other parts of her body.
Right now Ana has a long, uncertain road ahead of her with ABSOLUTELY NO MEDICAL COVERAGE. Although, she has a part time Physical Therapy position, she found out that her medical coverage does not include coverage for any pre-existing conditions. Any and all blood tests, CAT scans, PET scans, lymph removal surgeries, and future radiation treatments are not covered. She has already had to pay out of pocket this month for an ultrasound of her neck, for a CAT Scan with contrast and a second biopsy of her lymph nodes.
Ana and her family desperately need our prayers and our financial support during these difficult days ahead. I know Ana,John and their family have so many people that love and support them. Please make a donation to her as soon as possible, and send your words of encouragement and love. In addition, share her story with everyone you know and help us to rally around Ana. Thanks in advance for your kind and generous support. Much love.
