Hi, I’m May and I’m fundraising for an amazing athlete - my 16 year old son, Daniel Frey, to help him achieve his dream and compete at his first international event, the 2024 Oceania Athletics Championships, in Suva, Fiji, in the first week of June (2-9th). Daniel has just been selected to represent Australia in the Under 18 Australian Athletics team, a great honour afforded to only the best athletes in the country.

Starting from humble beginnings in Little Athletics eight years ago, Daniel has trained hard, with determination and consistency to become one of the best junior throwers in Australia in his favourite events, the Shot Put and Discus. He has been State Champion in Shotput in both New South Wales and Queensland, and won numerous medals and awards across school, Little Athletics, and senior Athletics. He just returned from the Australian Athletics Championships, in Adelaide, his third successive Nationals, finishing on the podium in the top three, with a big personal best throw.

As a country based, regional athlete without local facilities to train at, Daniel travels an 80 minute round trip four to five times a week to train after school, in addition to hours of weight training and plyometrics at home. Despite the hectic training schedule, he maintains excellent grades at school.

To save money, Daniel is determined to make the trip overseas himself, with just his Australian teammates, and without family travelling with him. However, the cost of his flights and accommodation and team levy run to several thousand dollars, beyond the budget of his large family at the end of a season of travelling around the country. He is incredibly grateful for any support received, and hopes to make his local community of Northern Rivers, NSW, and country, proud.
