In February 2023, during a routine MRI to rule out issues with her thyroid, a right-sided pituitary mass and leftward deviation of the pituitary stalk suggestive of an adenoma (brain tumor) was found. Since then, Amy has also been diagnosed with POTS.

Our goal is $3,067.74 — this will cover the cost of a (FDA Class II Medical Device) lightweight (just 33 lbs!) electric wheelchair that will give Amy the freedom and independence she truly deserves.

You may be wondering why we don't opt for a less expensive wheelchair. The truth is, we have tried. In fact, we've used two different types. While self-propelled and push/attendant wheelchairs are more affordable, they come with significant limitations. Self-propelled chairs require considerable physical effort and aren't suited for long distances. Push/attendant wheelchairs, on the other hand, lack the ergonomic support needed for long-term use, and they don’t offer Amy the independence she needs.

At present, our health insurance will only contribute $40/month towards the cost of an $80 push-only wheelchair, never really owning it. Despite the clear medical need for a powered wheelchair, supported by proper diagnosis and documentation, our insurance provider has denied coverage for an electric wheelchair.
