On July 3rd, 2024, my life changed forever when I was shot by a 14-year-old. In the aftermath, I watched my family show up, but only because they thought I might not make it. Once it was clear I would survive, I found myself alone—both mentally and physically. My rehabilitation was grueling, like military bootcamp, but I’m grateful for it. In less than two years, I’ve made progress that many in my situation can’t imagine.
For the past 20 months, I’ve been living on SSDI, which just covers my rent, bills, and food. I don’t receive EBT, and my ex-girlfriend, who was supposed to be my PCA, was often away in another city, still getting paid for my care. I have very few clothes and essentials, and despite reaching out, my family—some just 45 minutes away—hasn’t been there for me.
What I need most right now is a car. My family laughs at me for being taken advantage of, but having my own car would mean independence. I wouldn’t have to beg for rides or rely on people who don’t support me. It would help me get to work, school, and take care of myself. Any donations made, please know that I’d love to become friends or family with those who help. I’ve been alone for two years and was slipping into a dark place, but I refuse to let that happen. I’m here to help others and help myself, and your support will make all the difference.
