Ami is a 22 year old trans woman seeking asylum in Canada, after escaping her birth country. This was necessitated by physical and sexual abuse, housing insecurity and several instances of targeted harassment and outing. She has spent 3+ years in claimant status below the poverty line with life in limbo; without the ability to attend education (as an aspiring entomologist), obtain certifications and training for work, and holding a reduced healthcare status, which faced further cuts for refugees in May 2026. The healthcare cuts were enacted despite the asylum process requiring passing a thorough medical test for every claimant to determine 'cost burden on host country'. This limbo continued until last month when she was informed by the RPD that the court hearing is finally slated for January 2027.

Within the next 30 day period, 90 days before the court hearing, she needs funding for her representation where her asylum case is decided. This requires a minimum of CAD $1860, but this is an estimate from the lawyer on how long the process for the hearing will take per their hourly rate, but the hearing could end up longer than the estimate and thus cost more. Anything can help get across the finish line after 3 years of agonising waiting.
