Help Amie Recover & Start her UW Nursing Degree

Donation protected
My name is Nancy Kaufman. In my volunteer work for my alma mater, UW-Madison's School of Nursing, I met an extraordinary woman.

Amie Mybe's dream is to complete her BSN and graduate nursing degree and eventually return to her native Gambia, where she plans on joining its Ministry of Health to improve access and quality of care in the rural tribal villages.

Amie's dream was interrupted by a series of tragedies this past summer, and she had to withdraw from school on her very first day. Amie suffered significant injuries in two traffic accidents, one in Madison and the other in Gambia where she traveled (although injured) for her grandmother's funeral.

When she returned, due to her injuries she could no longer care for patients as a nursing assistant at UHealth. She had no income to pay for housing, food, tuition, a computer and transportation. She ended up basically homeless. She also lost her health insurance.

Since then, she has received free physical therapy by a very generous PT. She has worked hard to recover her strength. A fellow Gambian RN offered her temporary shelter in another Wisconsin city. She is working a few shifts a week as a CNA there.

Amie has registered for several online UW courses for Spring semester in January. She hopes to be able to work part-time at UHealth. She would then start her clinical baccalaureate program in Fall.

To accomplish this Amie needs immediate one-time financial assistance to get back on her feet in Madison in January:
Student health insurance Spring/Summer semester: 2300
Laptop purchase or rental, with software: 1200
Tuition: 2300
Student housing: 4400 to apply for and live in student housing for Fall semester
Transportation: 500

Amie has worked very hard over the past 5 years. She worked full-time in order to attend Madison College part-time. She graduated with an AD in liberal arts, completed nursing pre-reqs and earned a CNA certificate. She then applied to UW-Madison and was admitted. She will not be eligible for scholarships until next Fall.

Please help Amie achieve her dream.
