My name is Amena, and I’m reaching out for support during a very challenging time. In late October, I was terminated from my job as Director of Supportive Services at a permanent supportive housing program in the Denver Metro Area. For two years, the position was extremely stressful, and the toll it took on my health was significant. I ended up in the hospital with an acute bleeding ulcer and a large lump on my adrenal gland. I had surgery in July 2025, and thankfully the lump was benign, but I continue to struggle with stress-induced gastric pain and food intolerances. During my recovery, I was also diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve, which may become problematic over time. I went through countless tests, endoscopies, and a colonoscopy, all while trying to heal and manage my health.

After surgery, I took a month off work to recuperate and had to quit my second job to focus on my health. When I returned to work, I was not fully healed, but I was more aware of the stress and how it was affecting my life. Unfortunately, I was terminated soon after, just as I had moved my remaining savings into a double deposit for a more affordable apartment. With no financial reserves left, I filed for unemployment, only to have my claim immediately put on a 'program integrity hold' due to identity fraud that occurred three years ago. I’ve since learned that these holds can take months or even years to resolve, and there is little transparency or support from the unemployment department.

Originally, I planned to leave Colorado in December 2026, but my termination forced me to move up my plans. I started applying for jobs in both Colorado and Florida, and I was offered a position in Tampa. However, I can’t get there because I’m waiting for my unemployment to pay out. I need help getting my car ready for the trip—registration, tires, possibly brakes, and a headlight—as well as funds for gas and a hotel stay or two along the way. I am selling all of my belongings to cover what I can, but I am stuck until my unemployment claim is resolved. I’ve learned that there are class action lawsuits against the Colorado Unemployment Department for unnecessary delays and lack of transparency, and I am just one of many caught in this situation. I have a job waiting for me in Tampa, but I can’t get there without help.

I know that times are really tough right now for everyone. We are all struggling to put food on the table and pay rent or mortgage, and I am grateful for anything that anyone can contribute to help me get back to Florida and start this new chapter.
