Amelia (Sean) Weston has been struggling with her gender identity for as long as she can remember. Over the last several years she has made great strides to be who she really is. While she was immediately accepted by her friends and family there is one large hurdle left for her to overcome.
FFS (Facial Feminization Surgery) and being trans in general is prohibitively expensive. Unlike other transitional surgeries FFS isn't covered by Amelia's health insurance. The surgery is actually several small surgeries bundled together and done at the same time. Different faces require different things, but FFS can include any of the following: Hairline correction, Forehead recontouring, brow lift, orbit recontouring, rhinoplasty, chin and jaw contouring. The surgery itself isn't supposed to be dramatic. Amelia's goal is to appear female to the outside world and eliminate gender dysphoria.
Gender Dysphoria is the profound sense of unease, dissatisfaction, and emotional distress that comes with a disconnect between the physical body and gender identity. While things like clothing, makeup, and a change in social expression can ease dysphoria, few things can help match the body with the spirit as dramatically as gender affirmation surgeries. The goal isn't to gain beauty, it is to be seen as unequivocally female.
For a change like this it is important to go to a specialist who does this a hundred times a year, not someone who has done it twenty times over the course of their career. Unfortunately, this doesn't come cheap. The surgery itself costs $30,000 (several small surgeries). Anesthesia and the cost of the operating room adds an additional $6,000. This price doesn't include any aftercare costs such as medications, travel, living expenses or anything extra that might pop up.
While this amount is too much for one person, with enough people it is definitely an achievable goal. Donating will help Amelia move on to living as her true self. So please, if you are able to donate, anything helps.
