Help Amelia Get a Much-Needed Chair Lift

Hi! My name is Brooke and I'm a friend of Laura's - we are both NICU nurses! I started this GoFundMe as a way to help Laura's family obtain a chair lift for their disabled daughter, Amelia, since their insurance refuses to cover it.

Amelia was born with a rare genetic deletion condition, a tethered cord, and has quite a few other diagnoses. She is 15-years-old but has a mental capacity of roughly an 18-month-old. While Amelia can walk some, it's very minimal because she also has hamstring contractures, so her gait is unsteady and she falls frequently.

Unfortunately, her bedroom is located upstairs in the family's home, but her insurance, NYS Medicaid, won't pay for a chair lift because they claim it is a "comfort item." Their rationale is that even though her bedroom is upstairs, the family's home has a downstairs that she can remain on—makes sense, right?! WRONG!!! Both Laura and her husband end up carrying Amelia up and down the stairs, and we all know what this does to one's body, especially over time.

They *NEED* the chair lift—one that folds up so it's not always open, a seatbelt for it, and a remote. My goal is to help offset the out-of-pocket cost (appears to range between $2,500-$6,000) so Amelia and her family can get the equipment they need.
