My mother, Amber Wakefield, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called goblet cell adenocarcinoma in January 2021, following an appendectomy after suffering appendicitis. She had another surgery, called a hemicolectomy, on February 1st to remove a section of her intestines around the appendix, to check for signs of cancer spread. We got the wonderful news that the cancer had not spread and it was contained in her now-removed appendix. What should have been a big celebration quickly turned into a nightmare.
She had a hole the size of a dime in her intestines that went unnoticed for far too long. On February 11th, she was rushed into emergency surgery to clean out her abdomen and remove MORE of her intestines to fix the hole. She was suffering from SEVERE sepsis. She is very lucky to be alive.
She transferred hospitals and was in the ICU for a few days. Eventually, she was transferred to a normal room. She has an 11 inch incision down her abdomen that is still open to continue to clean her out. She now has a ostomy bag and a mucous fistula that will remain in place for at least the next 6 months. Her surgeon is confident he can reverse it, even though it was "deeper and more complicated than others."
She has been through hell and back and was given a second chance at life. She is a very strong and hard-working woman, but she will be out of work for quite some time and left with a lot of medical debt. She will be out of the regular hospital and into a rehabilitation hospital hopefully by Sunday (Feb 21, 2021).
Please join me in supporting this wonderful woman through her darkest time. Any amount is so greatly appreciated. She has 3 children and 4 grandchildren, on top of so many other loved ones, that aren't ready to live without her. Please share as well, if it's not too much to ask. Thank you so very much. ❤️
When I asked for permission to start this on her behalf, she was worried that money may be left over. We decided if that was the case, if any amount is left over... It will be donated to research for goblet cell adenocarcinoma. It is so rare that only 600 people worldwide are diagnosed each year. Because of this, not much is known and doctors disagree on the right treatments. We'd love to donate towards more research for this very worthy cause.
I can't even imagine how much her medical bills will cost. I don't even know what to put for a goal. I just know any little bit will help.
