Help Amber complete her move LA (aka who likes to eat?)

Hey Everyone! It’s me, your friendly neighborhood weirdo coming at you for some help.

As many of you know I’ve spent the last two years dealing with my mental and physical health issues. I’m so happy to report that after this time I have not only been able to get the doctors I needed but the surgeries, medications, and follow-up appointments to make sure that everything has been taken care of for me! I’m now having one last appointment to confirm my hormone balances and to basically sign off on all the treatments I’ve had up to this point and go to just regular old care for this here meat sack.

So what does that mean now? Well I’m finally able to take on the next phase of my life: a job in Los Angles and moving into the Brewery Artist Lofts in Lincoln Heights!! This is amazing for me for a number of reasons. For the first time in three years I will have my entire studio up and running again and I will have the strength and ability (thanks to you!!!) to start my art practice again. It also means that I will be gainfully employed to continue taking care of myself mentally and physically. However? There is one problem: moving.

The thing that makes the Brewery so amazing is that I basically get a gigantic cube in which to make my warehouse a warehome. The problem? There is no kitchen. At all. Not even a sink. As most
of you know the kitchen is one of my most important places in my home. Next to my studio it is where I have created countless meals for family and friends. It’s where I have hosted parties and held memorial, it’s where I have cooked meals to deliver to sick friends and where I’m able to retreat and cook as an outlet for my metal health.

Moving isn’t cheap on its own but I’ve been able to save enough to be able to buy all the materials to box my things up ($400), rent and gas for a 26’ U-Haul truck ($450~), movers to help me load the truck (I’m by myself in Santa Ynez and while I can drive a moving truck with my eyes closed load balancing my entire home for Hank and my safety isn’t my strong suit $1400), and the costs associated with moving into my warehouse ($7,000 first and deposit.)

So I’ve sat down with a specialist at IKEA and tried to find the two best options for my super special (read small and oddly sized) kitchen. I am lucky enough that I have friends who are willing to lend their help in the installation and I have enough queer audacity to handle what they can’t.

Have you been to a party of mine? Dined in my home? Celebrated a holiday with me? Maybe you can help me continue on with one of the ways I love showing up for my community… by hosting those I love in my home and to offer a safe place and a meal to those who need it…

What I’m looking at is buying and outfitting an ENTIRE kitchen. From a sink to the associated plumbing. From appliances to counters. From cabinets and hardware to storage and pantry. It’s a lot, I know, but anything you can help me with gets me that much closer to not washing dishes in my bathtub and eating Trader Joe’s microwaved food.

The breakdown is as follows:

Base Cabinet Frames: ~$770
Drawer Inserts (MAXIMERA): ~$465
Upper Cabinet Frames: ~$422
Cabinet Fronts (AXSTAD): ~$900-1,150
Corner pull-out fitting: $95
Sink: $149-279
Faucet: $129
Island: $549 (or $1,078 custom if I’m asking for my wishes hopes and dreams)
Countertops (EKBACKEN laminate or similar, ~18 linear feet): ~$400-600
Hardware/legs/toe kicks: ~$200-300
Installation accessories: ~$150

Total Estimated Cost: $4,466 - $5,604

I can hopefully fine a used stove for cheap and I would love a stretch goal of $1200 for a nice fridge. That brings me to around $7000. I know. It’s a lot.

Is it silly to invest in a kitchen for a rental? Maybe. But this move back to LA is what I need to do for my career and for my mental health. I don’t plan on moving again. I’ve been able to handle a lot but I can’t do it all so here I am, asking for help.

If you’re ever in LA you can bet your ass I will open my home for a snack, a meal,
a party, or even just a respite from the road. Thank you for taking the time to read this and even contemplate helping. I appreciate it so much.
