Hi everyone! My name is Amaya, and I am 3rd year student at York University currently pursuing my degree in Criminology.

I am reaching out because I am currently in a situation where my account is going to be on a financial hold that would prevent me from finishing my degree. Until recently, both of my parents supported my education. However, due to unexpected family circumstances, my father has stepped away from financial responsibility. Overnight, the security I once had has disappeared, leaving me and my mom with a financial burden we were never prepared for. As an international student, I am not eligible for any government aid or student loans, and this has placed a significant emotional strain on my mother and me. My mother has always tried her best to support my brother and I but unfortunately we are in a position where we are struggling to cover my tuition.

My tuition deadline is May 1, 2026, and time is running out. I am currently working part-time and doing everything I can to contribute toward my education, but despite my best efforts, it is still not enough to cover the high cost of international tuition. I am also trying to defer a semester so I can work full-time and save more, however even with full-time hours I will not be able to raise the amount required. As an international student, I am only allowed to defer for one semester, any longer could negatively affect my Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and my future chances of permanent residency in Canada, and I may lose the opportunity to continue building my life here. Returning to my home country is not an option for me, as we no longer have the stability or support to start over.

Despite these challenges, I remain committed to completing my degree and graduating with honours. Education is not just a goal for me, it is my path to independence, stability, safety and the future I’ve worked so hard for. I have maintained a strong academic standing and continue to give my best in every course. This situation has been emotionally difficult, but it is just fuel to keep going because I know there is great things to come.
