One accident changed everything for my mom — and now I’m doing everything I can to keep our family afloat and get back to school.
Hi, my name is Amari.
I’m a college student at Louisiana State University, and I’m fundraising on behalf of my amazing mom, who has been through more than anyone should have to bear.
In April, my mom suffered a serious fall at her new job that fractured her left ankle and sprained her right—an ankle that already has a steel plate, pins, and bolts from a previous injury. This injury triggered a cascade of medical and financial hardship for our entire family.
Shortly after the injury, we learned her blood pressure was at stroke level. It was a miracle she hadn’t had one already. She’s now on medication, but the stress has been overwhelming, and her health is still at risk. Despite being on workers’ compensation, her job continued to mistreat her—and has now furloughed her, cutting off her income and threatening her access to vital healthcare. She cannot legally take another job while on workers’ comp, even as the bills pile up.
We’re currently living out of hotels with our two cats and my grandmother. Every dollar I made over the summer has gone to hotel costs, gas, groceries, and unexpected emergencies—including my own urgent dental care, which cost over $400 even with insurance.
Right now, I can’t afford to drive back down to LSU to start the semester. My godfather has graciously offered to cover my share of rent with my roommate when I return to Louisiana, but my mom must remain in California for ongoing medical appointments and possible surgery. On top of everything, our left rearview mirror was stolen, and we can’t afford to replace it—making travel even harder and more stressful.
Why We’re Asking for Help
We need support to cover:
• Temporary housing while my mom heals
• Medical care for both of us (now at risk without insurance)
• Transportation so I can return to college
• Rearview mirror replacement (stolen)
• Basic living costs and emergency support
• A small safety net as we work to rebuild and find stable housing
We don’t take this lightly. We know everyone is going through something—but if you feel led to give, whether through prayer, donation, or sharing, it would mean the world to us.
Thank you for standing in the gap with us. May God bless you for your generosity, your prayers, and your heart.
With love and thanks,
Amari
