Clear Cell Carcinoma is a rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer that has left Amanda and her family devastated. In December 2024, Amanda was diagnosed with Stage 3 Clear Cell Carcinoma of the ovaries. This rare form of ovarian cancer presents significant challenges due to its aggressive nature and the difficulty in diagnosing it early. After feeling unwell for several months, Amanda sought medical attention, and the diagnosis has been a devastating shock to everyone who knows her. Amanda was having symptoms for over a year that included severe anemia, fatigue, hair loss, elevated heart rate, and swelling of her abdominal after she ate. She saw doctors, natural paths, and hematologists, who diagnosed her with Hashimoto’s Disease. After being treated for over a year for Hashimoto’s, she started having pain in her groin. On December 6, 2024 she thought she had pulled a muscle but later found out she had blood clots in her leg from her groin to her ankle. Once she was admitted into the hospital on December 7th, they did a CT scan of her lungs to see if the clots had spread. The arteries in both her lungs and the saddle were full of clots. She had emergency surgery to remove the clots in her lungs. When she got out of surgery she was complaining that her abdomen was swollen and she was in pain. The doctors ordered another CT scan, this time of her abdomen, and that’s when they found the tumors. She had multiple tumors with the largest being 10cm. The doctors decided to start chemo in the hospital. She was given Paxitaxel and immediately went into anaphylactic shock. Praise God she was in the hospital and they were able to reverse the anaphylaxis quickly. They were able to give her Carboplatin and Abraxane successfully. She underwent another surgery to remove the clots in her leg. She was finally released from the hospital after 3 weeks just in time for Christmas. On January 11th she had to put down her dog, Sassy, that had been the love of her life and her emotional support. Devastated but not broken, she continued with chemo. On January 18, 2025, she was admitted into the ER with severe abdominal pain. A CT scan showed that the tumors were growing and the largest was now 22cm and her ovary had been pushed aside and wrapped around her bowels. They decided to do an emergency surgery on January 22, 2025…the day before her 45th birthday. They removed her ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, the fat lining of her stomach, multiple lymph nodes, a portion of her bowels, and multiple tumors including the large 22cm tumor that was attached to her aorta. It took 3 GYN Oncologist and 1 GI surgeon 6 hours to scrape the tumor off her aorta without rupturing it. She woke up with an incision from her sternum to her groin and an Ileostomy. She was released from the hospital on January 28th and readmitted on January 31st. The section of her bowels that were sown together after they removed the damaged portion was leaking into her abdomen causing an infection. They also found that she had already started growing new tumors. After a week of IV antibiotics, she was released on February 6th. She continued with chemo weekly after her release from the hospital. All was going well until she started to bleed uncontrollably from below. In March she was admitted to the hospital and a CT scan showed that despite the chemo, she had multiple new tumors that were growing at a rapid pace. When released from the hospital, she went to her GYN Oncologist on March 19th who told her that her cancer was “refractive” and would not respond to chemo. For the type of tumors she had, there were no other options. They could do another surgery but they would come right back. She was then told she had 4-6 months of quality life left and to enjoy her family and do things she always wanted to do. She stopped her chemo and had come to terms with her diagnosis. A couple of days later, she was readmitted into the hospital with excruciating pain and bleeding. She decided to file a DNR with the hospital and leave it to God to decide her path. The Nurse, Hospital doctor and GYN Oncologist on duty were confused for the DNR and spoke with her. She told them what her Oncologist had said and assured them she was ok with her decision. The GYN Oncologist said there WERE still things they could do like Immunotherapy, clinical trials and radiation if those were things she was interested in doing. She asked the Oncologist if he would take over her case and he agreed. She received radiation treatment on her tumors and a blood transfusion for the lost blood. Once released from the hospital, she started chemo again. On April 22nd, she was again admitted into the hospital for severe pain and bleeding. A CT scan showed the tumors had fused to multiple organs and bowels. She needed another surgery but had to wait a week in the hospital until the chemo was out of her system. On April 30th they were able to perform the surgery. They removed all the tumors once again as well as the part of her bladder, bowels, and pancreas the tumors had fused to. She was released from the hospital a week later and resumed Chemo and her Immunotherapy. She was again readmitted a couple of days later with a bowel leakage and a large abcess in her abdomen. She was released after a couple of days and continued IV antibiotics at home. This is when everything changed! It has been 12 weeks since her last surgery and she is still tumor free! The chemo suppresses her bodies ability to make new blood cells, so she has had to have multiple blood transfusions. She is receiving her final chemo on August 11th but will continue immunotherapy. She will need a PET scan as well as regular scans at 3 month intervals to monitor any new tumor growths.

Treatment for clear cell carcinoma often requires aggressive interventions, including surgery, chemotherapy, and potentially other treatments such as immunotherapy. These treatments come with significant costs, many of which are not covered by insurance. In addition to medical expenses, there are daily living costs, travel expenses to and from hospitals, and the financial toll of missing work due to ongoing treatments and recovery.
