Help Kanan Get His Childhood Back


 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs teaches us that food and water are the foundation of a dignified life. Sadly, even these basic necessities are scarce in Gaza. Amid war and siege, children are suffering from malnutrition — including my son Kanan, whose immune system is weak and whose bones have become fragile due to a lack of proper nutrition and essential supplements.

 You might remember what happened to him at the beginning of the war when he broke his leg. His healing process took unusually long due to the shortage of food and medical care. And now, tragedy has struck again: Kanan has suffered a new fracture in his left elbow after a minor fall from a donkey cart. The fall was light — but his fragile bones couldn’t handle it.

 He spent 12 long hours in pain, from 6 PM to 6 AM, because we couldn’t find a hospital nearby due to ongoing bombings and the lack of safe transportation. When we finally managed to reach the American Hospital, only 2 kilometers away, it took us an hour and a half to get there.

 Even after he was treated and had a cast placed, we couldn’t find any calcium supplements to help his bones heal. Once again, Kanan is stuck — unable to play, unable to move freely — all because of a broken limb that could have been prevented with the right nutrition and care.

 As a heartbroken mother, I turn to you today for help. Whether it’s support for his treatment or help us survive until we can leave Gaza and seek a safer, healthier environment for Kanan, your contribution could give him what every child deserves: a chance to grow, play, and live in peace.
