Hi, my name is Alyssa. I’m 18 years old and a paraplegic, and right now I’m working hard to take the next big step in my life: going to college, learning to drive, and becoming fully independent.

But my journey didn’t start here. At just 9 years old, I was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition that left me suddenly paralyzed from the waist down. Prior to that, I had already faced significant health challenges, including hydrocephalus, which required two brain surgeries and caused severe headaches throughout my childhood.

After becoming paralyzed, I spent months in rehabilitation at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic, learning how to use a wheelchair and build upper body strength so I could one day return home. With the love and support of my family, I adapted to my new reality — but I’ve never stopped pushing forward.

Now, I’m proud to say I’ve graduated from high school and I’m heading to college. I’m determined to create a life of purpose and independence — but I need help getting there.

This GoFundMe will help support three major goals that are critical to my future:

1. Completing 45 hours of adaptive driving lessons so I can get my license

2. Purchasing a wheelchair accessible van

3. Paying for college tuition, books, and basic living expenses

These are huge steps toward independence — giving me the ability to get to school, work, appointments, and simply live life on my own terms.

But as you can imagine, the costs are steep:

• Wheelchair accessible vehicle: $45,000–$80,000

• Adaptive driving lessons (required 45 hours): $17,100

• Driver evaluations, modifications, and licensing fees

• College tuition and essentials
