My name is Mariah and Alyssa is my sister. Alyssa is an otherwise healthy 33-year-old, and on May 24th she was diagnosed with lung adenosquamous with brain metastases; a genetic form of lung cancer that has spread to the brain. Further imaging revealed lesions on the liver, along the spine, and in the sacrum as well as abnormalities in the bone marrow.
After consulting with the team at Sutter Sac, a plan for radiation and chemotherapy was set in place… and began to be implemented. After a few days of radiation and about a week at home, she decided to return to the hospital for further care. Follow-up CT scans on June 6th revealed that the cancer was spreading rapidly, and further medical care needed to be expedited, chemo was started immediately.
As of 6/9 Alyssa is staying at Auburn Sutter Faith and very soon will be transferred to UCSF to receive a laser bronchoscopy. This procedure will remove the mass from her left lung, obstructing nearly all airflow. It is not yet determined if the procedure will be covered by insurance.
The sudden onset of this disease has left Alyssa out of work and with many unexpected expenses. All funds gathered will go directly to Alyssa to cover medical and cost of living expenses. We know the road ahead is long and arduous, as Alyssa says “It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon”. She appreciates all help and support in any fashion you can give.
