Wowie’s Will to Live: Battling Kidney Failure

Alvin Dela Cruz, better known to his family as “Wowie”, twin brother of Allan, was first diagnosed with Kidney Failure in 2003 at the age of 26, just when he was starting a career as a Manufacturing Engineer. He immediately started undergoing dialysis and needed to have a kidney transplant replacing one of the two failing kidneys.

Alvin, through funding from his family, friends, churchmates and even strangers, was able to have kidney transplant in 2004, with his own mom as the organ donor. Unfortunately, in 2015, the transplanted kidney started failing again, causing him so much physical suffering that can only be alleviated by undergoing dialysis thrice a week. 

We, his high school classmates, have helped in our own capacities to make the situation as financially bearable as possible by donating money and organizing fund-raising activities. But we can only do so much.

His dialysis 3x/week and monthly maintenance medication now costs approximately US$ 1,600 (PhP 80,000) and he badly needs it in order to function on a daily basis. His family has already exhausted all means in order to pay for his medical needs.

We have known him for 31 years and we have borne witness to how he has valiantly fought against his condition. We have seen how he prodded on rather than allow himself be dragged back by this disease; how he seized every chance to earn a living by selling textbooks, electronics, and food supplements just to help defray his staggering medical expenses; how he served as an inspiration to the youth of his community church by leading them as President of their National Youth Department; how he created music as rhythm guitarist of their music ministry despite his fragile health; how he has kept his fervent faith burning when most of us would have easily given up; how his eyes still light up with plans, projects, and unrealized dreams. 

We intend to fight his fight, to hold his hand for as long as he needs us. And we will never let go. We therefore humbly ask you to help us by donating any amount you can. You can help him lead a normal life and keep that spark of hope in his eyes blazing.
