Help Alvin Continue To Tell Our Stories

Donation protected
For over a decade, Alvin C. Jacobs Jr. has brought social justice movements to life using his camera to connect those of us in our living rooms to what is happening on the ground.

His photography has illuminated the conflicts, the struggles, as well as the resilience and triumphs of people battling injustice with law enforcement, with housing, and day to day survival.

In Charlotte, we have been fortunate to have stories be told prominently in the Levine Museum of the New South’s “Know Justice Know Peace” which not only brought to life the uprising that followed the police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, but grabbed powerful shots of people such as now Charlotte City Councilman Braxton Winston, organizer Ash Williams, and CMPD officer Mike Campagna.

His work was also featured the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American + Culture in the Welcome to Brookhill exhibit that brings to live the human realities and battle between Charlotte real estate development and human neighbor resilience, and culture of people who are often relegated to human shrapnel in the name of economic progress.

Alvin’s work extends well beyond Charlotte, however, as he began in his hometown of Rockford where he documented the response following a police shooting that occurred in front of children at a local childcare center.

Traveling to Charlottesville and many other prominent flashpoints in our history, most recently Alvin was in Minnesota to document to outcry following the police killing of George Floyd where he and his camera were doing what they do.

During the second night of documenting the George Floyd protests in Minneapolis, his ankle was badly sprained and camera knocked to the ground.

As an independent artist, he is uncovered by medical insurance, his camera is still broken, and he has not had the ability to pay for proper medical care for his ankle.

We have created this GoFundMe to support the healing and the work of 2018 Charlottean of the Year, widely respected documenter of modern history, and our city’s most honest mirror, Alvin C Jacobs Jr. Please give what you can.
