Help Allie get affirming top surgery!

Through my work, I've helped many of my trans siblings get top surgery. I helped them jump through the hoops they needed to to live their true lives. I told them to do everything I was doing, and I watched them succeed. I am very happy for all of them - but the same system has failed me, and I must find a different route.

I did what I was supposed to. I got the psychiatric assessments, I got the referrals, I worked hard and dieted to get my BMI in the range that had been deemed “acceptable” and waited three long years - only to get rejected for top surgery.

I don't have to like the surgeon's justification, but I understand it to an extent. The province will only fund a certain amount of top surgeries, and the surgeries going to younger, more “passable” folks makes fiscal sense. They can look more “normal” than me and will get more years of use out of the results.

I got turned down by the only plastic surgeon in the city who does transgender top surgery. I could wait on an out-of-town surgeon's waitlist for another three years and attempt again...but I am not likely to be a better, less-old candidate in three years. It's time to look elsewhere.

I am saving up to go and have the procedure done in Thailand. Even factoring in flight and accommodations for my recovery, - it will be less expensive than the Edmonton surgeon's quoted for-profit rate. The surgeon is very safe, well known, and produces good results.

Why is top surgery vital to me?
  • I would feel more comfortable in my own body. Right now, it feels like a betrayal that I have to live inside of.
  • I wouldn't have to use fake breasts anymore. It so frustrating to put in all the hard work to know myself, but still having to wear false body parts so that others may see the real me.
  • Safety. I have been assaulted a few times for looking “too obviously trans”. Alberta is not the safest place, and many bigots are looking for something that “isn't right about me”. Having top surgery helps me pass their bigot radar a little easier and gives them one less clue.
  • I would be able to go swimming without feeling I have a big target on me

I do my best to help the 2SLGBTQ+ community and all my transgender siblings through my work, speaking gigs, and volunteer efforts. It is spiritually rewarding but unfortunately does not help me save money very quickly. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Love,

Allison
