My friend and safe streets advocate, Allen N. is healing from broken bones and other injuries after hitting a pothole on LA's streets.

This past Saturday, Allen was on his way to volunteer at a holiday event for Streets For All, a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles focused on safe streets and mobility for all. While riding an e-scooter from the bus to the event, Allen hit uneven pavement in the bike lane and landed face-first on the asphalt. He was wearing a helmet which broke in two.

Ironically, he is now a victim of the unsafe conditions on our roads and streets, the very thing he has been fighting to fix. Allen was taken to a nearby hospital where they performed x-rays and he was diagnosed with multiple fractures: a right wrist scaphoid fracture, distal radius fracture of the forearm, and closed acromion fracture of the left shoulder. He also broke his front teeth which restricts his ability to chew and talk and will require extensive dental work.

Due to his wrist, arm, and shoulder fractures, Allen's mobility is severely limited and will require orthopedic evaluation, casting, possible surgery, and months of treatment. He has been unemployed and job hunting and is now unable to perform daily requirements for many of the jobs he has applied to. We're raising funds to help Allen access the medical and dental care he needs on his road to recovery, and to help offset his living costs and rent while he mends.

As a safe streets and transit advocate based in San Pedro, Allen has volunteered for the Measure HLA campaign, designed materials for South Bay Forward, helped organize the South Bay Transit Summit, and fights for rail and BRT extensions across LA County. He advocates for people who, like him, do not have cars and want to live in a city that is safer for people who ride the bus, bike, roll, and walk.
