It all started with a semi-truck. Allan wasn’t driving it — he was just stepping off a curb, crossing the street. In an instant, the truck screeched to a halt, and Allan was fell to the ground. The pain was overwhelming. At the ER, doctors told him he had torn both the muscle and tendons where his left quad attaches to his knee.

Determined to get home, Allan pushed through with crutches and booked a flight for the next morning. But when he tried to stand, his leg gave out completely. He fell hard, tearing the last of his muscles and tendons from the bone. He couldn’t get up or even reach his phone. Thankfully, a housemate came home and found him.

Back in Miami, Allan returned to the ER. This time he left with a heavy brace, stronger pain meds, and the news that he would need reconstructive surgery to reattach his quadriceps to his femur. He’s now out on short-term disability, facing months of recovery and therapy.

Here’s the challenge: short-term disability only pays 75% of base salary — no overtime, no night pay. Allan had just gotten back on his feet after years of financial struggles: reduced pay early in his career, a devastating house fire, and paying both rent and mortgage during repairs. As the main provider for his family, he recently had to take out a loan just to keep food on the table.

If you know Allan, you know he has a heart as big as he is. He never meets a stranger — only a friend he hasn’t gotten to know yet. He’s always the first to show up when someone needs help. But Allan would never ask for help himself.
