Hi, my name is Alistair. I started my transition journey in February 2014, almost 9 years ago. At the time the funding pathway and waiting lists for Welsh patients were long, and it took 3.5 years to get to my first appointment at the GIC in London, and a further 2+ years to get hormone treatment. I was finally signed off for top surgery and referred to a surgeon in June 2019, and then the pandemic hit.. Waiting lists have increased, and then in October 2022 I was removed from my surgeons waiting list due to my BMI.
I now have long covid, and have been suffering with that for nearly 3 years, have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and have had bilateral knee surgery which made my mobility far worse, and I am now walking on crutches. So losing the weight needed for me to get back on the surgical waiting list on the NHS is almost impossible for me to achieve. The knock on effect on my mental wellbeing has been a lot.. It's been too long a wait fighting the NHS system, and I'm running out of options.
So I'm now looking at private top surgery, a decision which is the culmination of years of setbacks at every turn with the NHS. I wholeheartedly support the NHS, but my mental health has been impacted enough.
Please help me achieve my fundraising goal so that when I look in the mirror I can see a chest that fits my gender and affirms me
