Help Ali's Family Get Back On Their Feet
Donation protected
Quick Summary: Ali’s husband suffered a series of strokes back in February. Due to the strokes, he has been unable to work, therefore leaving them behind on bills. This fundraiser was made to help create a safe bathroom for her husband’s recovery and to get them back on track financially. More details about the costs are included below.

Hello Everyone, Zahra here. For those of you that don't know, our good friend Ali has been going through a tough time these past few months. Her husband Laurence has been struggling with health issues for several years. Following a hospitalization for Covid in 2020, he was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure and requires hemodialysis to filter his blood. This, along with diabetes, high blood pressure, and a recent diagnosis of severe sleep apnea, left him at a very high risk. This February, he had multiple strokes that had him hospitalized for a week, this hospitalization was followed by a seizure. A few weeks later, he had another series of strokes, this time keeping him hospitalized for over three weeks and requiring him to stay at a rehabilitation center for a month to recover from his deficits.
Thankfully, Laurence is back home now. He is continuing therapy
(physical, speech, occupational) from home 12 hours a week, as well as attending other appointments with Neurologists and Cardiologists and many other specialists to continue to improve his condition.
Obviously this has caused a lot of financial strain on the family. Both Ali and Laurence are teachers, so neither are currently paying into Social Security. This has caused Laurence to be denied SSI and Disability through Social Security. Unfortunately, he also hasn’t been teaching for long enough to be eligible for disability through the Teacher Retirement System (TRS).
He does, however, have Long Term Disability Benefits through his job, which we applied for in April, but we are still waiting on pending paperwork for this application. We have also been applying for SNAP and other Texas Resources, but those applications have been pending since February as well.
There are a few things that the family needs right now:
While Laurence has started walking with assistance and is on the road to recovery, there are some improvements that would make the home a safer place for him. The number one thing being the bathroom. Ali was able to install grab bars around the toilet and outside of the bath, but the tub is still a safety hazard in itself.
Ali was able to get a couple of estimates from different companies ranging from 9,000-25,000. I've included a photo of what this cost includes and have listed it below. Credit financing options aren't an option for them and they don't have the money or credit to cover the cost. I am hoping to raise at least $15,000 to help cover the cost of the remodel of their bathroom and to help pay some other bills off.
If you can't donate, please share. I hope and pray that none of us have to be in the situation that they are in right now.
