Hi! Hola!

I am Alina Cedeño, I was born and raised in Ecuador, South America. 

I am currently a senior at New York University in Shanghai with a Business and Finance Major. Being a Latina first generation student, never stopped me from dreaming bigger and achieving what many may consider “impossible”.

Since I was a child, I have had many goals in my head, I’ve always wanted to inspire people. By the age of 9, I started selling home-made jelly, tuna-sandwiches, and many different snacks as well as handmade bracelets and handcrafts outside my family’s hardware store every summer. When I was 12, I started working as a cashier in the family business. From an early age I started to save for my college education.

I’ve never taken my education for granted and never will. I believe in the power of education and I know that with NYU’s education and it’s resources I will contribute with my knowledge and help my family and community financially, by building more job opportunities and creating resources for others in need.

I have always been hardworking and passionate about my goals and getting the best education is one of them. I started my college career with no money at all, with my life savings I took a plane to Shanghai, China,  ready to continue working for my dreams.  I have paid every single dollar -of my tuition, fees, room, board and all costs related-  these past 3 years with my own effort. I do not have any financial support from parents, family nor friends. Coming from a developing country, where education is still not a priority never limited me to not have higher goals and to keep fighting regardless of the circumstances and the lack of support.

During these past 3 years, I have been working till the point of exhaustion. I have created my own company in Ecuador, imported goods and tea from china, sold products brought from China and the States, babysitted, tutored, took care of adults, offered cleaning services to houses, restaurants, clinic and many others, sold products knocking doors from Monday to Sunday while studying full load to pay for my tuition, transportation, food, and dorm. Yet with the pandemic, I might not be able to continue studying since I can not afford it.

Being in China allowed me to study during mornings, work as a tutor in the afternoons, sell tea in Ecuador at nights and during early mornings (3-6am) gave me the opportunity to do online teaching in Ecuador.

The past 3 years through college have been extremely challenging but I’m proud to say that I will graduate in May 2021 (if I make the amount). In order for me to graduate I need to pay $25 000. Which has been extremely difficult for me to make in Ecuador since our minimum wage is $400 monthly. 

In the previous year I was able to raise the amount by working as many part time jobs as possible. But this last year, I was not able to make the amount for my last 2 semesters. 

Studying, working as much as possible, worrying about making it to the installment deadline and having no food security at all, have exhausted myself. Yet, I will do it again because I will not give up on my education, and I will not give up on my dreams. 

Every dollar will count to relieve the amount, I know it may seem a big quantity but I am sure we will make it.

Hola a todos!

Mi nombre es Alina Cedeño, nací y crecí en Ecuador.

Actualmente soy una estudiante de último año en la Universidad de Nueva York en Shanghai en la carrera de Negocios y Finanzas. Ser una estudiante latina de primera generación (primera en graduarse de una Universidad en mi familia), nunca me impidió soñar en grande y lograr lo que muchos consideran "imposible".

Desde que era niña, tenía muchas metas en mi cabeza, siempre quise inspirar y ayudar a muchas personas. A la edad de 9 años, comencé a vender mermeladas caseras, sándwiches de atún y otros snacks, así como pulseras y artesanías hechas a mano fuera de la ferretería de mi familia, cada vacación de verano. A los 12 años comencé a trabajar como cajera en el negocio familiar. Desde temprana edad sabía que quería estudiar en el exterior por lo cual comencé a ahorrar para mi educación universitaria.

Nunca he dado por sentada mi educación y nunca lo haré. Creo en el poder de la educación y sé que con la educación y sus recursos que la NYU me está brindando, contribuiré con mi conocimiento y ayudaré a mi familia y comunidad económicamente, creando más oportunidades de trabajo y creando recursos para los más necesitados.

Siempre he sido muy trabajadora y apasionada por mis objetivos. Obtener una educación completa y de calidad fue una de ellos. Comencé mi carrera universitaria sin dinero en absoluto, con los ahorros de toda mi vida tomé un avión a Shanghái, China, lista para seguir trabajando por mis sueños. He pagado cada dólar -de mi matrícula, cuotas, alojamiento, comida y todos los costos relacionados- estos últimos 3 años con mi propio esfuerzo. 

Mis padres, familiares y amigos, quienes siempre han estado ahí para mi, no han podido brindar un apoyo económico por sus distintas necesidades y situaciones. Venir de un país en vías de desarrollo, donde la educación aún no es una prioridad nunca me limitó a tener metas más altas y a seguir luchando sin importar las circunstancias y la falta de apoyo.

Durante estos últimos 3 años, he estado trabajando hasta más no poder. Creé mi propia empresa en Ecuador, importé bienes y té desde China, me dedique a la venta de productos internacionales, cuidé niños, dí tutorías privadas y en grupo, cuidé de adultos, ofrecí servicios de limpieza a casas, restaurantes, clínicas y muchos otros. Todo esto mientras estudiaba a tiempo completo, con la preocupación diaria de lograr llegar a mi objetivo y poder sustentarme (comida, vivienda y transporte). 

Sin embargo, con la pandemia, es posible que no pueda seguir estudiando porque no puedo pagarlo. Vivir en China me brindaba muchas oportunidades de tomar varios trabajos de medio tiempo como: profesora de español, inglés, babysitting, mientras vendía de manera online productos importados en Ecuador por las noches y en las madrugadas daba clases de apoyo académico de manera online a niños en Ecuador. 

En el punto más crítico de la pandemia tuve que regresar a Ecuador donde estuve paralizada por casi un año y no pude reunir el dinero para mis semestres como usualmente lo hacía con mis 7 trabajos de medio tiempo. (También, considerando que el salario mínimo de Ecuador es de $400 mensuales).

La NYU, ofrece el programa #1 en el mundo de finanzas y cada año está valorado en $75 mil dólares (4 en total, $300 000), de los cuales gracias a mis múltiples trabajos, mis becas y mis premios solamente me hacen falta  $25 000. Los últimos 3.5 años de universidad han sido extremadamente desafiantes, pero me enorgullece decir que me graduaré en Mayo de 2021 (si reunimos la cantidad necesaria). 

Estudiar, trabajar lo más posible, preocuparme por llegar a la fecha límite y no tener seguridad alimentaria en absoluto, me ha agotado. Sin embargo, lo volvería a hacer (las veces necesarias) porque no renunciaré a mi educación, ni a mis sueños.

Cada dólar cuenta para aliviar la cantidad, sé que puede parecer una gran cantidad pero estoy seguro de que lo lograremos.
