Support Alicia Luke-Smith’s Struggle to Full Recovery
Greetings everyone. My name is Learie Luke, I am soliciting your help on behalf of my beloved younger sister, Alicia, and her family (Reggie, Aquia, and 3 year- old Kaden). Alicia recently lost her child after just over three months of a very difficult and painful pregnancy; during most of which she was so sick she could not go to work. On February 25, 2017, she was rushed to the emergency room where it was discovered that her kidneys were also failing. Unfortunately, she lost the baby, required surgery and was given two pints of blood. For a few days after losing the baby she began to recover physically and her kidney function began improving.
However, within a few days in the hospital her medical condition took a sudden turn for the worse and she began to decline. When she responded, she was disoriented and incoherent. This went on for several days. During that time when she did open her eyes she was unable to speak well, unable to eat and unable to focus with her eyes. These symptoms baffled the doctors. They treated her with a variety of medications, but initially the drugs seemed to have no effect on her condition as she continued to decline further. The best hope, the doctors thought, was to transfer her to a major hospital to receive more intensive specialized treatment. She was displaying symptoms of inflammation in the brain but they did not know why. Meanwhile, her family, friends, co-workers, churches, and members of prayer lines in the United States and overseas, poured out their hearts pleading for a miracle on her behalf while she waited to be transferred.
During this anxious waiting period for a bed to become available at a major hospital, God stepped in -- in a mighty way -- and the doctors tried her on another drug. Within a few days she demonstrated some positive responses and by the end of that week she began to say a few words. She has begun to make slow but steady progress ever since. We thank God for this miracle and answer to many prayers. We would like to thank everyone for their prayers on her behalf, however, she still has a long way to go. She was transferred to a rehabilitation facility in mid-March. Among other issues, she continues to be very weak and cannot sit up by herself or stand on her own; her short-term memory is a challenge and her eyes are still trying to focus. She is undergoing physical therapy and is expected to be in rehab for the next several weeks.
While her family and friends continue to pray for her complete recovery, we are asking everyone to donate any amount that you can to help Alicia and her family with her looming medical bills, and other financial expenses that need attending to because she has been unable to work. We thank you in advance for your financial support and we are grateful for your continued prayers for the Lord's continued healing. Thanks again, and God bless.
