On August 18 just before 6pm, smoke could be seen billowing from the eaves of my mom’s house on Elizabeth St in Rockford. Thankfully, Alicia Huizinga and her dog Kole made it out safely with the help of some neighbors looking out for her.
The fire started in the upper level of the home, leaving everything below either charred or covered in water/smoke. The east roof remains peeled open and some ceilings on the main floor have collapsed. As of today, there is about 8” of water standing in the basement.
Although she has insurance, she lost all of her everyday essentials and belongings to the fire. Her car remained safe in the detached garage, but she and Kole will certainly need a place to stay over the next few months while the process unfolds.
If you are able and willing, she could really use some financial help to get back up on her feet again. We have been in touch with the Red Cross who is working on getting her a goodwill voucher for some clothing. Thank you for your consideration, it is greatly appreciated.
