Alicia's Story
Alicia Port was born late March 1939 in Poland, on the brink of a world about to collapse. One day, while she and her mother were visiting family in the countryside, word came suddenly: they could not go home. They has to hide - immediately. A wagon arrived, and they were lifted into a hollowed out haystack, pressed together with other Jewish families, hearts pounding as they were driven deep into the countryside to an unfamiliar farm.
There, baby Alicia, her mother, and eight other Jews were hidden in a bunker no larger than a large dinner table. The hiding place was inside a barn, beneath a horse - the animal's presence masking the scent of human life and deceiving the German dogs sent to hunt for them. For six long years, Alicia and her mother lived in that tiny underground space, sustained by the courage and compassion of a Christian farming family who risked everything to feed them and keep them alive.
Meanwhile, Alicia's father had been taken from their home and sent to a work camp. Near the end of the war, he was placed on a train bound for Auschwitz. In a desperate act of survival, while the train was moving, he jumped from it and fled into the woods. Against all odds- in what can only be described as a miracle - in 1945 the family reunited at the very spot where their home had once stood...now nothing but rubble.
Alicia emerged from hiding severely malnurished. Confined for years in a space too small to stand, she developed rickets and other lasting medical problems. Yet she survived.
Alicia's family eventually rebuilt their lives in Israel, where Alicia's parents lived out their remaining years. After their passing, Alicia moved to America, married and later settled in Florida. Though her husband has since passed away, Alicia has carried forward a remarkable spirit. Her life story - marked by unimaginable hardship - has given her an inner resilience and warmth that radiates in every interaction. Her signature red lips always smiling.
Today, however, Alicia faces a new and frightening challenge. She is struggling under the weight of an unexpected $15,000 special assessment bill from her apartment building, along with mounting medical expenses she simply cannot afford.
Please consider helping Alicia. She has endured the unthinkable and yet continues to meet the world with grace and positivity. Holocaust survivors like Alicia carry living history within them. As we hold their stories in our hearts, we must also help carry them when they need us most.
No gift is too small - your support means the world to Alicia and to all who believe in remembering the past to build a better future. Thank you for standing with Alicia.
