Help Alicia Gomez Cross the Finish Line!

Dear Friends of Fencing Sports Academy and the Greater Community,

Our beloved Coach Domingo at Fencing Sports Academy (Fairfax, VA) has been home in Mexico caring for his ailing mother, Alicia Gomez. Alicia requires a liver transplant after being diagnosed with hepatic cirrhosis which prevents the liver from working properly.

The situation is dire, but there is hope….

We the families at Fencing Sports Academy are starting a GoFundMe to raise $80,000 for Alicia. Liver transplants are among the most expensive medical procedures in the world. The cost is a heavy financial burden for the Gomez family, as it would be for most of us. But we choose to carry these burdens and take on responsibilities despite the extreme stress because our loved ones are priceless.

Getting on the Transplant Waitlist…

In December 2022, Alicia had to go to the emergency room due to symptoms of cirrhosis. She was given prescriptions to help her feel better after a series of liver and blood tests. Unfortunately, in March 2023, Alicia was admitted to the emergency room due to extreme exhaustion and nausea and remains in critical condition to this day. Coach Domingo and his wife flew from Fairfax, VA to Monterrey, Mexico to be with her.

Alicia is about to be approved by the Doctors Committee to be on the transplant waiting list. Her health insurance will cover a portion of the procedure. To be placed on the official transplant waiting list, the patient must show proof that they can pay for the surgery and hospital fees. Even with insurance, the Gomez family must come up with USD 80,000 by July 26, 2023, to be placed on the waiting list. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards Alicia's liver transplant procedure.

A Legacy of Making a Difference…

Alicia is a middle school teacher who has spent 30 years making a difference in the lives of generations of children. She successfully raised Coach Domingo and his sister, Alicia, on her own. Coach Domingo grew up to achieve the highest level of success as a member of the Mexican National Fencing Team! At 33 years old, Coach Domingo is just beginning to carry on his mother’s legacy, teaching the next generation of children skills to be successful on and off the fencing strip.
