Alicia came to the US searching for a better future for her and her 7 year old daughter. The difficult economic situation in her home country of Venezuela, being on her own with a lack of family support, and an experience of intimate partner violence led her to flee first to Colombia and then here to start a new life. An organization helped her apply for and gain asylum but she has been waiting many months for her paperwork to come through so that she can work and provide for her family. She says she has heard it could take many more months and she has also not yet been able to get legal support for her daughter’s case, so they remain in limbo.

Alicia’s partner who used to help support with household expenses was recently stopped by the police (supposedly for a licence plate light being out) and turned over to ICE while he was traveling home from a job in another state. He was placed in detention for a few months before being deported recently. In addition to the emotional stress, Alicia is now without that financial support that she counted on to cover expenses. In the midst of her struggles, Alicia has shown her big heart by helping many others who are also experiencing family crises and instability due to immigration enforcement. She has helped house and feed several families, connect them to resources she has learned about along the way, and offer emotional support and encouragement.

While she gets stabilized and waits for her documents to come through, Alicia really needs some extra support to cover personal and household expenses and seek legal support for her daughter’s case. She is alone here without other family to depend on. She has skills to offer and has expressed dreams of starting her own hair and beauty salon or dessert business to become financially independent but she does not currently have any funds to begin. Any support provided through this fundraiser will go directly to helping Alicia and her daughter on their road to a new life and self-sufficiency.
