We are a Refugee Sponsorship Committee (Group of Five) that formed in 2016 to support Ali, a Sudanese asylum seeker living in Tel Aviv, to come to Canada. After several years of waiting, we are excited that Ali will be arriving in Toronto in May 2022!
As sponsors, we will support Ali to find a steady job, continue his education, find medical and mental health care, and navigate local transportation. We will also provide basic necessities, such as a bed, a winter coat, food, and cooking supplies. With your support, we will be able to take the steps necessary to help Ali integrate with his new community!
We're asking for donations totalling $20,000, beyond the $6,000 that our group has committed. Note that all funds will be used to support Ali establish himself in Canada. Any size donation helps. See examples of how you can help Ali:
- A donation of $30 will help Ali get a set of winter gloves
- A donation of $60 will help Ali get a bed set
- A donation of $200 will help Ali get groceries for one month
- A donation of $500 will help Ali get 3 months of public transportation
- A donation of $1200 will help Ali pay rent for one month
*All donations will be processed in Canadian dollars and are unfortunately not tax-deductible*
Thank you for your thought and generosity in helping Ali make Canada his new home!
A message from Ali
My name is Osman Ali (I go by Ali or Keday). I’m 36 years old and I am one of the survivors of the Darfur genocide in Sudan. I was born in a small village in Western Darfur. I have been living in Israel for almost 12 years. I studied Natural Resources and Environmental Studies back home in Sudan. Currently, I’m finishing my B.A in Communications, interactive design major at Reichman University (IDC) in Israel. I’m also an activist for human rights, a community organizer, and a translator. I have worked with many NGOs in Israel and back home in Sudan in the past and continue this activism work now. Currently, I’m a project manager at the African Students Organization in Israel and work with the Sudanese Community Center. I’m an outgoing, open-minded, respectful, and sociable person. Education is my drive. I like books, technology, quiet places, sports, entertainment, cooking, and travelling.
Ali has been interviewed a number of times about the experience of African refugees in Israel. To watch these interviews, please click on the following links:
