In 2008, I entered a rent-to-own agreement to buy an old family home. After both owners passed away, I finished paying for it—but was denied the deed. For years I fought, even hiring a lawyer who did nothing. Finally, in April 2025, I secured the deed to my house and property—my American dream. The Challenge I’ve faithfully paid the back taxes and every year’s taxes since living here. But this year the county doubled my home’s tax assessment from $64,100 to $133,900. Even though my disability homestead will reduce taxes starting in 2026, I must pay the full 2025 bill now. My Situation I’ve gone without so much—living on baloney sandwiches, sacrificing my health—to hold onto this home. I am severely disabled (venous insufficiency, peripheral arterial disease, diabetes, CHF, and ankylosing spondylitis). I have no assets to sell, no car, and no ability to work. Why I’m Asking It breaks my heart to ask, but I can’t cover this year’s taxes on my own. If I lose my home after everything, I lose my dream and everything I have. Any donation—large or small—will bring me closer to keeping my house. It all adds up. Thank you for reading, thank you for caring, and God bless. —Alfred Britt Facebook Post: In 2008, I entered a rent-to-own agreement for my home. After years of struggle—and even being denied the deed—I finally secured it this April. My American dream is finally real. But now, Henry County, GA has doubled my home’s tax assessment from $64,100 to $133,900. I’m disabled and unable to work, with serious health conditions. I’ve already paid the back taxes and every year’s bill, but this year’s property taxes are far beyond my reach. I’ve sacrificed everything to keep this home. Now I need help to save it. Any donation, big or small, brings me closer to paying these taxes and keeping my dream alive. If you would, please share my GoFundMe, it would be a huge blessing. Thank you, and God bless. —Alfred Britt
